The project was completed when I studied in Tokyo as an exchange student. The topic is how to interact with plants.
I have many plants at home. As an element of nature, plants can create atmosphere and bring vitality to space.
Ideation
How do we interact with plants in general? Water it, fertilize it, rake it, trim it carefully, even pull some weeds. Plants don’t give us a timely feedback and respond, but the growth and changes of plants remind us what we should do for them. I want to break through the traditional way and bridg a new gap between plants and human.
The interaction behaviours with plants should be well understandable and interesting. All of people can play with it. So PLANT PLAYER came out.
Concept
I inspired by vinyl record and phonograph. I want to display plants through music.
Each plant has its own shape and color. As time go on, a plant will grow, change even bloom. A plant like a unique vinyl record can play music through own characteristic features.
When a plant turns around, the shape will be also changed. The sensors can track the changed shape and colors and translates to music. With the change of its size, shape and color, it can play different music.
Design
Prototype
I used Kinect to track the changed shape and a particular color of a plant and translates them to 8 points in the processing program. With the change of the position of 8 points, the program can play different tones which I set to 8 piano's tones.
I recorded a short video at the presentation. Though the program is not perfect, it could work well.
Application
Application
Main screens
The application is an additional value for the product. Users can use the application to save the music and track the growth of plants. You can share your music with friends and post it on the Facebook.
